A resource connecting health care leaders to the general business literature
Us v Them:
Physician leaders and health care executives have a lot in common with business leaders. We (in health care) just tend not to know much about what they (in business) do and how they do it. And of course, we rail against thinking about "health care as a business."
Those of us who are both committed to improving health care and have lived, learned, and taught in both worlds find that the business management press is rich in experience, knowledge, and thought leadership addressing problems very similar to those we face in health care. These include organizational function (and dysfunction), service delivery, customer focus and satisfaction, change management, strategy and implementation, operational effectiveness and efficiency, quality management, gaining and holding markets and competitive advantage, building technical skills, organizing and growing intellectual capital, managing new product and service development, managing upwards and downwards, optimizing organizational structure, doing more with less, managing within a the regulatory environment .....the list goes on. Business leaders have been at this in an organized way much longer than we have. We should be able to learn something from them.

Authors:
Core contributors are well known health care leaders. They have studied - and often taught - the general business and management literature as a means to achieve improvement in hospitals, medical groups, managed care organizations, or government. They work and publish regularly with other current and emerging health care leaders. Each represents a significant health care constituency (community hospital, academic medical center, physician practice, quality and safety, clinical service line, disease program) and understands the contribution of effective leaders to setting and achieving goals in health care organizations. In their view "connecting the dots" between business and health care news and literature can accelerate health care leadership effectiveness.
